Finally like some others, I received my Vostro A90. 16GB SSD
, 1GB, UBUNTU 804. Came out to be near $250 US.
Anyway, I boot it up, everything seemed to work. Even the webcam which under a well lit room was better than I expected.
I shut it down, fully charged it, booted and installed PCLINUXOS 2009 with a flash USB.
I notice now, after checking a few things out, that the wireless didn,t work out of the box. Took me a while to get it working because I didn;t have immediate access to a wired lan connection.
Well, it;s working now. Second issue is like what others have also come across is a hissing sound from the speakers. I didn;t notice this in the beginning, or with UBUNTU. BUT, this is the first time I have been in a quiet room with it. De-selecting the BEEP item in the audio mixer window seems to work.
Which reminds me of another thing. The sound output appears quite low. I say :low: because I had previously bought a refurb mini9 for my son;s birthday on the Dell outlet. I will double check, but I seem to remember the music he was playing being much louder than what this A90 is putting out.
By the way, the mini9 is running UBUNTU REMIX 9.
Well, for now, I still like it. I should mention, that I actually bought this for my other son;s birthday coming in about a week (he does not know).
Anyway, at this point, it seems that the extra 2GB memory stick I bought seems not necessary. I was intending to install Windows 7 RC, but I don;t feel any pressing need now.
PS. Sorry about the typing errors. I am normally a touch typist with all 10 fingers, and this is the most I have used this keyboard yet.
By the way, has anyone used or bought one of those rubber keyboards? Do they last? Are they any good for a cheap one? I seem to remember seeing one in Staples Stores some time ago. I think that and a small bluetooth mouse would be handy.
