I haven't looked at the technology in a while so this may be outdated...
I'm pretty sure she'll have to format the iPod to FAT32 (Windows) from HFS+ (Mac). The easy way is to plug the iPod into a Windows machine with iTunes and have it reformat the device. There are manual ways to do the same and can be found quickly via Google.
If she's sharing this iPod with a Mac then the best answer is to Hackintosh her Mini 9.
And please don't double post. I just spent 20 minutes answering your other post before I saw this one. I would have answered this first and waited for a response before making recommendations for Linux based music management applications.

this is not the best linux forum, you could google "ubuntu hfs ipod" it's possible, maybe an easy file permission issue and I saw tutorials on google, just depends on if you want to search and read them. Easiest way I would do it is format the ipod on a windows PC and then sync with ubuntu (on the mini from an SD card)
There's about a dozen apps that will do it, I don't sync because I have the itouch but on my mini I use Amarok for my music on an SD card and I've heard gtkpod was easy for syncing. You could read - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PortableDevices/iPod
