I'm posting this in the general discussion area because the original post is in the Hardware Issues /Problems area and some people might miss it. It's not really about a problem..
AltrdGenetics posted a message about installing the ClearType tuner power toy. Although I downloaded, installed, and used that, I couldn't get to the buttons at the bottom, but the reference to ClearType reminded me that there is a ClearType setting in Windows XP Pro (possibly in Home, but I don't have a computer running that version to check).
Just turning ClearType on, without any other tweaking, has made a HUGE difference in the readability of text on my screen.
If you're not familiar with turning ClearType on, here are the instructions:
right-click on the Windows desktop
check "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts:" and choose "ClearType" from the dropdown
OK, OK to close the dialogs
