Default Ways to save space in a mini9 running xp on 8gb SSD? - 05-11-2009, 02:34 AM

Hey all, I got my gf a miini 9 for her to use at school. I've only installed avg, office 2007, and firefox, but the mini is down to 800ish MB left. Windows update also took up a good chunk of storage..

Are there any ways to trim down the xp install?

Check this thread out... It helped me...

I am running Win 7 now, but had XP running on my Mini and it was taking up less than 4GB. You can actually get it much smaller...

You have to do all the stuff that is listed in various threads on this forum. Let me try to give you a short list to start.

Update to 2 gb RAM
Install a SDHC card ( I use an 8GB)
Use the installed MS Works, instead of installing Office, it's too big.
Use IE8 instead of Firefox, it's too big.
Get rid of Windows Live
Get rid of the DELL folder.
You can also store the i386 folder on the SDHC and delete it from the SSD.
Ditto the drivers folder.
Get rid of the following programs if you don't need them:
Movie Maker
Power point viewer
MS office compatibility
Games
After you update the RAM, shut off paging, hibernation & restore.

This should give you about >3gb to work with.

If you ain't going to uninstall SP's and hotfixes, you can remove the following folders in \Windows

\$hf_mig$
\$NtUninstallKB****$

You can also turn off restore points. And stop Indexing service. And reduce VM size to save HD spaces.

Default nLite and USB install - 05-12-2009, 01:44 PM

If you have a copy of Windows XP around (or even the one that they give you) then use nLite to strip out the programs/components that you dont need. I created a post the other night about how to do this Fresh slim Windows XP install on the Dell Mini 9 speeds things up « Tim Pinet’s Blog and I am only using 2.5GB of my 8GB drive after installing all updates/drivers/OpenOffice/Eclipse.
