Default HDD Erase / Wiping SSD Drive - 05-07-2009, 04:51 PM

All,

I had read the one article that addressed shuttering and all that. It talks about a DOS app called HDD Erase to wipe the drive out and essentially start a new to prevent this phenomena from happening. Is this the only tool that utilizes a certain ERASE command, or can I use DBAN or any other wiping software to get the same effect if I were to reinstall an OS or anything of the sort? Let me know and thanks!

I tried the HDD Erase but it's not working. It got freeze after listing my STEC SSD.

The "ATA SECURITY ERASE" command seems to be able to restore Intel X25 SSDs to pristine, factory-new speed. I dunno about STEC SSDs and I dunno about what's the best utility to send that command, since I've never needed it. The "hdparm" utility might be able to do it, but it's documentation is unclear.

Yeah...HDD Erase freezes on me in two different dos environments when it asks me for p0 or p1... It's a pain... I guess it does matter what chip its using too doesn't it?

Would the erase option when installing OSX work as well? I think they give you an option to rewite upto 32 times.

There's no point in using a "secure erase" program if you're reusing the disk. In fact, doing lots of writes to an SSD is not good. What you want is a program that will work with the SSD controller to basically reset all of the blocks to the "available" state. I noticed that somms' USB key BIOS updater appeared to have such a program, but I did not try it. Some SSD drives may not support this feature.

I tried the Bios updater, they just had a quick erase which looks like it deletes the partition.

FWIW: Quick wipe option overwrites the partition’s data area before deleting the partition. Makes one pass of the disk while the DOD Wipe overwrites the partition’s data area before deleting the partition. Makes seven passes of the disk. This is the security standard for the U.S. Department of Defense.
