Default How to clone a Ubuntu Flash Drive in XP - 04-30-2009, 04:02 AM

I'm running Dell's XP Home on my SSD and I've installed Ubuntu onto a flash drive and I wanted to be able to clone it in case anything went wrong.

I found out through trial and error that Acronis True Image won't clone a flash drive no matter how you try to do it.

Finally, I found that Winimage, a utility originally designed to make images of floppy disks, will work. I did the cloning on my XP desktop, not on the Mini. Winimage will write an image of the flash drive to your HDD, and then it will correctly write that image to another flash drive (even though it was formatted as Fat32). And that new flash drive boots fine on the Mini.

Surprisingly, the Ubuntu disk image that Winimage wrote to my HDD cannot be copied with Windows utilities, so I'll have to leave it where it is or delete it.

Unetbootin is pretty awesome:

Received lowest quality mini 9 with 512 megs RAM, 4 GB SSD. Additions:
-4 GB SSD [2 GB SD Card: getting 16 GB SDHC]
Sold for $180 so I could buy Mini 10, XP/Ubuntu, 160GB HD, 1GB RAM, 1366x768 screen, 6-cell for $260.
[Extra screen space IS AMAZING, as is having a working keyboard]
