Next school year our district will be purchasing netbooks for all of our sixth grade students. So far it looks like the Dell is going to be the one chosen. We will be running Edubuntu on them also.
This summer I will be teaching a summer tech camp for incoming sixth grade students and we'll be using the netbooks with Edubuntu so that they are familiar with how to use the applications and with the os itself. The goal is that at the start of the new school year when all the sixth grade students receive the netbooks that there will be a group of students in each class that will already be our in house "experts".
Anyway, one of my main focuses this summer with the camps is to use the netbooks as a tool as much as possible. We will be doing a lot of outside/nature orientated activities focusing on collaborative work.
One of the activities that I would like to do is install a usb gps unit inside the mini 9's and go geocaching with the students. I've seen the various guides/tutorials on how to install a cheap usb gps unit in the mini 9 but they all seem to be running Windows on them.
My question is, has anyone used a usb gps dongle on the mini 9 or on another machine running Ubuntu and had it working properly. And if so, are there any decent gecocaching/gps programs that would run the gps unit properly?
