Re: Hulu playback - 04-09-2009, 06:47 PM
Okay.. I just tried using Safari instead of Firefox. It runs much better in Safari. The framerate is lower than what it should be... but I think it's decent. I'd rather use my desktop or my full size laptop...but Hulu on Safari does just fine
as long as I don't go 480p

Slimmed down Vista Home Premium, STEC 16GB, 2GB RAM, Chrome browser (although have had the same results in FF)
My experience w/Hulu:
HQ is out of the question--not watchable.
Full screen is borderline watchable, but not enjoyable (so what's the point, right?!)
Pop-out and maximized is somehow slightly better than full screen, but still only borderline watchable.
Pop-out and almost maximized (3/4-ish) is very watchable. Can still see a bit of frame drop, but not enough to ruin the experience.
I think that is about all we can expect until Flash gets more efficient.

Mine is 512MB, 8GB SSD, Ubuntu... real bare bones. If I try HQ on Hulu, it does lag and get choppy. Full screen is OK in low-res, though maybe a little slow, but not bad. It's best to just play videos in the browser window because to be honest, it fills up most the screen anyway.
I get the same thing on YouTube. The low-quality videos are smooth. If I move to HQ, sometimes it will cause problems. And HD, forget it. HD looks like a picture slideshow and causes my Mini to become very sluggish.

people who claim that they can view their vids perfectly are probably not able to see the subtle frame drops
i can play hulu fine but as noted early, there are times every 5 to 10 seconds where there is a slight freeze that is noticeable to some but not maybe to all.
btw, i used firefox. safari 3 had comparable performance. maybe safari 4 beta will fare better?
