Default Backing up Dell's factory image - 04-07-2009, 04:19 PM

Has anyone backed up the image they got from Dell? I want to load windows 7 when I get the mini tomorrow, but I'd like to keep the ubuntu image that it shipped with so I can switch back to it if I want down the road. Is it possible to use ghost via a flash drive or is there a better option out there that is say free? Thanks guys!

If you haven't done anything that needs to be saved the included Ubuntu disc is actually a factory restore, Dell modifications and drivers included.

I use Clonezilla (clonezilla-live-20081112-intrepid) to backup the ubuntu partition onto a USB external drive. I used Unetbootin on the windows desktop computer to make a bootable USB stick with clonezilla installed from the iso. It's important to use clonezilla's "2008112" version with Dell Ubuntu 8.04. Newer versions hang

Pleaese report back with your findings.

Before I started using my Mini 9, I booted a USB drive with Ubuntu and backed up all the data on the SSD to a compressed image file on a USB hard drive.

All it takes is a single line in a terminal. Something like: "dd if=/dev/sda | gzip > /media/usbdrive/dell_mini_9_oem.img.gz". If I recall correctly, the end result was a 1.3GB file.
