Default itunes music on SDHC card - 03-30-2009, 10:01 PM

I have a SanDisk 16GB SDHC card & I'd like to use it full time in my Mini 9 - mainly as a place to store my itunes music. My itunes library is now on my desktop computer at work but I'd rather have it on my Mini 9. It is about 6GB in size. Has anyone tried using an SDHC card for their itunes library?

It would be great to be able to keep the library on the SDHC card since it won't fit on my 8GB HD in the mini. An added bonus would be the ability to transfer easily from my Mini 9 to my desktop computer. Is this possible? BTW, I did a quick search on ilounge.com but didn't find the info so I came back here to see if someone here has actually tried this.

I haven't had any luck with Itunes playing on my Mini. I tried it with 512 ram and it skipped a bit and wouldn't play well. Actually this was a podcast so I am not sure if thats different but it was local to the computer. I want to try it again with the new 2 gig chip I have in the computer at this point.

It works for me, but I'm running Leopard on my Mini (I also have 2GB RAM). In the preferences, specify the folder to be the SDHC card (mine is a SanDIsk 16GB Ultra II formatted HFS+) and you should be good to go. The speakers are pretty lame, but headphones aren't too bad.

If you are limited on space but still want tunes try using Songbird or foobar2000.

I store my ~6 GB ITunes library on a 16 GB Transcend Class 6 SDHC and it runs no problem. It definitely frees up some hard drive space and works great for me. I'm using Win XP w/ 2GB RAM.

I keep my itunes music on my sdhc without problems. be sure do not check the "copy files to itunes music folder" option in the advanced tab of itunes options. this will copy all of the imported content in the itunes music library. so if you have the itunes library on the ssd it will go out of space very quickly!

I'm using Ubuntu on my Mini 9, but have a collection of mp3 files on an 8B SDHC card which I then play through Rhythmbox. Works perfectly, no skipping or jumping, and that is with a "Class 2" SanDisk Card (which isn't the fastest speed).

Pretty much any SD card will be fast enough for MP3s. The highest bitrate for an MP3 is 320 kbit/sec and most music is probably encoded at 128 kbit/s. The slowest of slow SD cards will transfer around .9MB/sec, or about triple the rate needed for the highest quality MP3.

The problem I have is deciding which music to leave behind. My MP3 collection is 100+ GB.

I am using OSX. I have a ATP 16GB Class 6 150X device from MDD. It cost $42.99. This thing is nearly as fast as an SDD. I use it specifically for my iTunes stuff

I have a 16GB Transcend Class 6 SDHC and have my iTunes library on it and it runs perfectly. You actually CAN have iTunes set up to copy all of your songs to the music folder as long as you change your music folder location (to a folder on your SD card). You can find this in the iTunes preferences.
I use my SD card for all of my work documents, music, photos, and movies....definitely frees up a lot of space on the SSD.
