Unhappy Travelling with the Mini... a magnetic question. - 03-20-2009, 08:00 PM

I have a bike and a tank bag - the Mini will fit in the tank bag, and I may try to figure out a way to use my Garmin GPS.
BUT !
Before I do that - I have a serious question. The tank bag adheres to the tank of the bike with fairly strong magnets!
Will this wipe my Mini? or make it unusable? Anybody know?
I don't dare "try it and see", because if the Mini is vulnerable, it would be Fini!

It won't wipe out your data since it doesn't have a HD. I don't think a minor magnetic field will effect any parts or operation of the mini.

I rode my bike cross country a few years ago and carried my laptop in the tank bag (Oxford) for a couple of days (Then moved it to a saddle bag) with the only effect being minor screen anomalies for a few seconds if I booted up right after pulling from the bag. I figured (more like guessed) it was the magnets causing the issue. Hence the move to the saddle bag. But it could just as easily been a heat issue.

I would say your bigger concern should be potential damage from vibration. A friend of mine had his main board damaged on his DSLR. He carried it in his tank bag on his RC51 all the time. Of course, we don't know for sure, but why temp fate?

So, IMHO, to be safe, carry it in a saddlebag, tail pack or on your person.

OKJohn, Which Garmin unit do you have? Not to go off topic, but I have a fair bit of experience with mounting Garmin units to motorcycles. What kind of bike do you have?

Feel free to PM me if this is too OT for this forum.

I got a Garmin x20 for the Mini. Not a self contained gps unit.
or is it 20x, - whichever, it works fine with the Mini in the car. 8-)
Currently riding a Kaw 650R - it's alittle hot rod ! woooooooot.
My wife has a Honda Helix scooter (250).
I reckon there is a way, with remote screen mounted uder the windshield, & earbuds, but I will prolly not actually use it WHILE riding.
Might be nice to take along tho.

John
