Re: "Refurbished" exactly what does that mean? - 03-20-2009, 02:03 PM
Hey, and welcome to the Forum!
Regarding the search feature-- yep! We've got one... right up there /^ (Upper right of screen, should say "Google Custom Search"-- there are answers to everything on this forum and the search works pretty well, actually.
Regarding laptop "refurbished" conditions, check out this site: http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segt ... delloutlet
(That should popup... I hope)
There are basically three categories of things sold at the Outlet, only one of them is really "refurbished," but it seems that on this forum all three categories kinda are called "refurbished"; Previously Ordered New, Certified Refurbished, and Scratch and Dent. That little info site should outline the details.
Regarding horror stories-- mine worked great (actually "refurbished" from the Outlet), until I tried to installed OSX, which froze halfway through. After a hard reboot, then the mini wouldn't let me boot from anythng (no USB drives found!) or finish the install. Dell sent me a new SSD imaged with XP, thinking jusst the HD had crashed. I installed it, still wouldn't boot. Just sent the entire machine back to them after the tech I took it to told me the motherboard was bad. Dunno if this is because it was a refurb or not, but it definitely has tainted my personal view of the Outlet as a whole. I did get a great deal though-- and most of the people on here that bought from the Outlet seem to be quite happy with their deals. (Often there are complaints about comestic things, but, the machines as a whole seem to be robust and cheap). My experience isn't common, it seems. Heh, I probabbly just got unlucky. As a whole though-- I still think I'd buy from the Outlet again.

Two years ago I purchased a Dell M1210 laptop from the outlet. I believe it was a "certified refurbished" When it arrived it looked brand new. 10 months into the purchase the motherboard died and Dell replaced the motherboard in 3 days. While I'm not trying to minimize the fact that the motherboard died I've had no other problems with the laptop and I'm very satisfied with the purchase.
If you have an interest people's opinions of Dell Outlet laptops in general, not just the Mini 9, you might want, if you have not done so already, to take a look at the notebookreview.com they have several threads discussing the good and bad laptops received from the outlet. Here is just one of the threads: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthr ... efurbished
Edit: Another good thing about the outlet is that if you can get a coupon the mini could turn out to be a very good deal.

It means you save about 40% of the purchase price compared to a new one and get it shipped out in a day or two instead of waiting a month for it.
Oh, you do also get the extra green sticker on the bottom, but they don't charge for it.

you get the green sticker saying how environmentally smart you are, a cheap boxing job, and a big discount. otherwise, good as new. at least mine is. i got a 512/64gb w/ bluetooth, cam for 299 and it shipped overnight. so all in all, refurb is worth it if you in the words of jg wentworth, want my mini and i want it now.
i loaded osx and it has been running great. i would recommend the outlet path over ordering new. but i like saving money, so thats just me.

Got a blue Dell Outlet sticker for "Previously Ordered New", which is the way I went.
