Re: Why do you own 2 Minis? - 03-20-2009, 10:40 AM
ok, i have four so explanations are in order:
one for my daughter who had to live with my nasty old transmeta tablet pc.
one for my son who is not allowed to take his expensive laptop to summer school.
one for my wife who deserves one whether she needs one or not.
one for me to try OSX because they're so cheap, and the mini is easy to hackintosh.
i use an hp mini 1000 because the keyboard is so good.
and they're all small enough to take on vacation!
plus the outlet is addicting!

Why Two Minis? - 01-21-2010, 10:27 PM
I realize this is a somewhat "old" thread, but what the heck.
The first one, an Inspiron 910 I got for myself after seeing the weight - at a hair over 2 lbs it was a no-brainer, considering the condition of my poor beat up shoulder joints.
My sister needed a "travel buddy" so I snapped up a second Mini (Vostro A90) & I've been tweaking things along so she doesn't have to mess with it.
"One of these days" I'll send it to her.
They're both running PhoenixOS Flamehawk (for minis), a Kubuntu 9.10 based operating system that's in the pre-release (alpha) stage.
It runs fast enough to be impressive; had both XP & the Dell Ubuntu Remix to compare it to & the speed of the PhoenixOS is refreshing.

We have the following:
* 2 Dell Mini 9's w/OS X and runcore 32gb SSD drives on each, 2gb ram (one for me, one for my husband because he was so jealous of mine!!)
* 1 Dell Mini 10V with Windows XP and extended battery. I haven't bothered to add an SSD on this one yet since I'm keeping it as a Windows machine and only use it as a netbook. It works great to try out new recipes and use it in the kitchen!!
I'm kind of kicking myself for not getting a cherry red mini 9, just because they're so cute, but I just can't justify spending the extra money on it. I have two teenage daughters but they have their own laptops for school and don't like the keyboard on the mini 9 (can't blame them).
After my last business trip this past weekend, I decided to play around with iTunes and movies on my mini 9. They play flawlessly - no skipping or lag in the video. Regardless of the player I use on the Mini 10V, I can't get any video to play so that it's watchable.
I had been looking into getting an Archos player but after reading reviews, I decided I'll hang onto my $$ and just take my mini 9 on my next trip. Since I was one of the lucky ones who snapped up the extended batteries, I conceivably have nearly 10 hours of video on an 8.9" screen as opposed to my small and difficult to watch iPod touch.
