Default Mini 9 EOL? - 03-11-2009, 03:14 PM

I start noticing a general un-availability from the Dell Premier site for the mini 9. I asked my Dell rep about this thinking it might be a glitch on the site. The respond came back about the 9 is "EOL for higher education".

Is it possible that Dell will stop selling the model to a particular vertical market? Can anyone else from Dell confirm this? Does it also mean the mini 10 is slated to replace the mini 9?

By EOL do you mean "end of life," or am I interpreting the acronym incorrectly?

Last week I noticed that the Mini 9 was not displaying a price on my employer's EPP page, but I just checked and it is back now. I also checked my university's EPP page and it's there too. Both sites allowed me to build a system, and when I added them to my cart the standard 7% discount was applied. I'm not sure if the EPP and Premier sites are the same, though. I've heard EPP and MPP used interchangeably, but it seems like Premier might be used for purchases by large organizations rather than individual users.

In any event, despite its popularity, I could certainly envision Dell trying to phase out the Mini 9 and steer new users towards the Mini 10 instead. The biggest reason for Mini 9's popularity (the ability to easily upgrade components like RAM and SSD) could very well end up being its downfall. If you can keep upgrading and replacing parts at will and the computer continues to function well, what reason would the average user have to replace it every couple of years (unless you just like trying out new technology products)? That would seem to be even more true with large organizations who have trained IT specialists available to keep their systems running smoothly. The Mini 10, like the Mini 12, basically forces users to replace the whole unit if they want to upgrade. Obviously no computer will last forever, but I could definitely see a Mini 9 having a longer life cycle than either of the other two models.

I don't think the Mini 9 will disappear overnight (at least I hope not!), but it could happen at some point in the not too distant future. Either that or the second generation Mini 9 might look a lot more like Mini 10 and Mini 12.

Latitude 2110: Blue Ribbon, N470, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD, Touchscreen, Win7

In my original post, EOL means end of life. I will keep checking my premier site. The only model showing is the mini 12.
