Default OS Shootout - 03-07-2009, 04:17 AM

First, I'd like to start by saying that this is an awesome forum and you guys are a big part of the reason I just bought a Mini 9. My question is, what is the best OS to run on the mini 9?

Now, I'm not trying to start a flame war about the general costs and benefits about particular operating systems, what I am mostly interested in is speed and stability on this particular hardware package, and using it primarily for internet browsing and web apps (google docs, etc), some offline word processing, and media playback for train/plane rides.

I would be very interested to hear from people who are either currently dual booting, or have run different systems on their mini 9. Thanks for the replies.

OS X runs great on the Mini 9. I have 1 gb RAM and 16 gb Stock SSD and it is snappy. If the Mini had a bigger Tab and Shift key, I would be in heaven.

Still, my Mac-A-Dell is a fun machine with the added advantage of looking at surprised faces of friends when they see a Dell running OSX.

Macadell Mini 9 OS X 10.5.6
2 GB Crucial RAM 16 GB Stock SSD

I bought the mini 9 on the sole fact it can run 10.5.6 so well. I have the 8gb/1gb ram/webcam model. For what a netbook was made for (internet and simple computing) OS X is great. It's quicker than I expected it to be. The features like expose and workspaces (I have them hot cornered) work like a charm for the mini 9. I know these can be added on with Linux and Windows though.

Why do you specifically mention Ubuntu 8.04.1? Ubuntu 8.04 has been updated to 8.04.2 since January. And there's also Ubuntu 8.10 which is newer than 8.04. Or did you mean the Dell-specific version of Ubuntu with this?

I don't have my Mini 9 yet (for some reason Dell postponed the delivery...), but I'm going to run Ubuntu 8.10 on it.

Dell XPS M1530 (Red, Core 2 Duo T9300, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, nVidia 8600M GT, Ubuntu 8.04)

The ability to run OSX so well is the only reason I even bought the Dell Mini!

Same as you TheDoctah.
If it wasn't for OSX I would have bought something else. Or nothing as I already have a great m1330 by Dell.

I'm using Windows 7 build 7022 right now on my Mini 9 and it truly runs outstanding; I think Windows 7 is what I'll stick with. Everything works, it is very fast, battery life is great, one simply cannot ask for more. Each build of W7 just keeps getting better and better. To wit, I'm @ build 7048 x64 on my M1330 and wow, even the minor glitches from 6801 and 6956 and even 7000 seem to be cured. I simply cannot say enough good about Windows 7.

XPS 420|XPS 420|M1330: Windows 7 x64, Windows 8-8102
M1330: Quad boot: Windows 7 x64, XP Pro x64, Ubuntu, Media Direct
Mini 9: Black, 2GB, 1.3MP Cam, BT, Runcore 32, Windows 7
Mini 10: Black, Z530, Intel 5100 WiFi, OCZ Vertex SSD, XP Pro & Windows 7 (sold)
Mini10v: 2GB, OCZ Vertex, Intel 5100, Windows 7
