Hey just a suggestion to y'all. (Ubuntu desktop users) - 03-06-2009, 04:56 AM
OK, I don't know why I didn't personally think of this before, but this make the viewing area of your desktop seem so much larger. This may not fit the style of all the users here but I have become fond of it: I suggest changing the gnome panels to auto-hide. Just right-click on the panel and click on Properties. Check Autohide and close. Now you have your panels to hide when not in use. And you can save yourself even more pixel space by changing the settings of Autohide.
To do this, open up a Terminal window [Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal] and type 'gconf-editor' and hit enter. Expand the 'apps' folder, scroll down and expand the 'panel' folder, scroll down and expand 'toplevels' folder and then click on 'bottom_panel_screen' to edit its settings. Click on auto_hide_size and change its value to 0. Do the same for 'top_panel_screen'. This will shrink the size of the hidden panel to '0'. This does not remove the panels, it just keeps them completely out of view. But whenever you move the pointer to the top or bottom of the screen the panels will show again.
This may not seem like much, but it does add 48px of view to your desktop, essentially making your whole screen viewable for running applications. You can even shrink the width of the panel by unchecking the 'Expand' setting in the panel properties. What it will do is shrink the width of the panel down to just what is already added onto the panel. This is mainly just a style preference., though.
Also, you can install Maximus, which is a component of UNR, (http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/gnome/maximus). It makes windows more expanded by removing title bars when maximized. All this really made the screen seem so much larger.
Well, I hope this has helped out a few users out there. Just something I like to pass long.
