I just received a notification on my Mini running Ubuntu about software updates that are 4 updates.
I clicked on it, the Update Manager popped open and the only options are Check, Install Updates or Close.
I clicked Check, it checked what updates there were and said there were 86 files to download (you can see as the progrss bar is filling up saying X of 86 files) for a total of 1.2 Mb.

Now i know it checks what stuff I have installed and then runs its check for any updates but how can i find out what it's going to update? I remember the last time I did that and Firefox got all screwed up and my Windows key stopped being F11.

Can I do this update through terminal and see what it wants to update?

After searching for a while i found that if you run the following command on the command prompt, you get a list of what is being updated:

apt-get upgrade

it then spits out the following information after it searches what you need. It also asks if you want to upgrade or not:

The following packages will be upgraded:
  firefox firefox-3.0 firefox-3.0-gnome-support firefox-gnome-support
4 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 1230kB of archives.

not sure what the upgrades themselves are but at least I have a way to actually know what programs are going to get upgraded.
