Default Finding public wireless access points - 01-28-2009, 05:59 AM

In my country we don't enjoy the wide distribution of public wireless access points that residents of the US have.

What I'm looking for is software that will run on my mini9 and alert me to the presence of public wireless access points in range. It should give me some sort of an audible signal as I'm driving around with the Netbook on the passenger's seat.

I'm not after any fancy break-in software -- I just want to build up a reference of public wireless access points in my area.

Any suggestions?

If you're using Windows XP, try using NetStumbler. Google it and you can download it for free.

If you're using Linux, then try a tool called Kismet but it does not have audible warnings.

Hope this helps.

If you're really after "public" access points, try the hotspot finder at It sounds, though, what you're looking for is unsecured access points, whether they be public or private.
