Smile Using an operative system from USB drive - 03-22-2014, 02:55 PM

Hi there!

My dell mini 910 has no M-sata SSD drive and the battery is dead.
I want to run an operative system strictly from a usb drive.

Which OS would be most appropriate for this?
Any links or tutorials are appreciated.

Many thanks!

Linux would probably be best. You can't run Windows that way. Just find your favorite Linux distribution - many of them provide instructions for running from USB.

I have been running Linux Mint 13 on my Mini 9 from a usb stick. Mint includes an installer to create a usb stick including persistence....which allows keeping any changes or updates you make to the system. I also have an SD card installed for storing data. There is also a script available in their repository which installs the drivers for the Broadcom wireless card in the Mini 9. Works great.

Sure, I suggest 12.04 LTS the 32 bit version Download Ubuntu Desktop | Ubuntu

This link tells/shows how to create a bootable USB stick in Windows, Linux, or OSX How to create a bootable USB stick on Windows | Ubuntu

Mint is a very good option as well.
