Default Ubuntu LTS 12.04 speaker hiss after headphone insertion (Full Text) - 09-10-2013, 09:45 PM

Historically, there have always been problems with speaker hiss after headphone insertion when running Ubuntu on the Mini 9.

The problem also exists on Ubuntu LTS 12.04, but as pointed out here:

[lubuntu] Lubuntu 12.04 headphone hiss problem

It seems that the problem cannot be solved using the somewhat mysterious model=toshiba hack in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.

After installing Ubuntu LTS 12.04 and struggling with this issue, I discovered that I can silence the hiss by changing the settings in /var/lib/alsa/asound.state.

Here is the setting in question:

        control.5 {
                 iface MIXER
                 name 'Auto-Mute Mode'
                 value Disabled
                 comment {
                         access 'read write'
                         type ENUMERATED
                         count 1
                         item.0 Disabled
                         item.1 Enabled
To make the change interactively, use alsamixer to configure the Auto-Mute setting as disabled.
