Default install Windows 7 on flash drive - 04-10-2012, 04:16 PM

Hi,

I have a dell mini 9, where the SSD is dead. Runcore SSD is kinda expensive for me in my country. I am thinking to install Windows 7 on the USB flash drive or external HDD. I do not mind stick the flash drive on the outside.

This is not about how to install WIndows 7 from USB to SSD. This is about how to run Windows 7 from USB, like Ubuntu.

Any ideas ? Thanks alot.

Windows really, really doesn't like to run from "removable media" and makes it difficult to install and run that way. I recall seeing someone suggesting using a Hitachi (?) driver to tell Windows XP that the drive was fixed, but I doubt that works for Windows 7. If I were you, I'd run some form of Linux and call it a day. You might even be able to use Wine to run favorite Windows apps.

You can use PWBoot to install Windows 7 onto a USB Drive (Flash or HDD).

I would have posted a link, but there appears to be an initial restriction preventing that for new members. So, as many would say, "just google it!" The reboot.pro site is what you're looking for.

Note that you will need to use the Diskmod driver filter in order to use a pagefile. Also, I recommend you use an external HD rather than a USB stick as they are generally quite slow. I first did this using a 16GB SanDisk Ultra, and performance was tolerable in comparison to some of my other 8GB and 16GB sticks. I now just use an external 1TB drive when I want to use Windows. On the go, I use Ubuntu!
