Default New SSD w/ WinXP - 02-01-2012, 06:46 PM

I finally got a new HD for my Mini 9. A RunCore 64GB SSD. (The dell SSD failed on me a while back and I finally got around to installing a new drive.) I reformatted with what came with the Dell Mini, WinXP Home Edition.

I have a few questions:

What do I do to protect this drive from prematurely degrading or should I say increase it longevity?

Should I turn off the paging file?

Is the drivers listed here up to date:

Drivers for Dell Inspiron Mini 9 (910)

Thanks

You can turn off the paging file if you have 2GB RAM. I would not do it otherwise. Don't run defragmentation and try to not fill up the disk.

Dell has the latest XP drivers on their support site.

Thanks Holmes4, damn, your always here.

You know, that was an easy reformat.

Yes I have the 2GB Ram. Not sure if all the SSD tweaks I did to Win XP will help. I'm just paranoid about these SSD's. The original STEC drive did last two years, but the replacement (under warranty) only lasted about a month. It lasted until just after the warranty expired.

I will take more care as how I treat this drive. Hopefully get a couple years from it. I believe the RunCore does have a two year warranty. So I'll give it that long, lol.

BTW, I compared the drivers on that post to the ones at Dell and they matched up. I only have one problem and that is I can not get the wireless network card to work properly. Its constantly acquiring network address. I need to check it further. Probably some setting somewhere.

Dynamic I believe. That means the router doles out IP addresses like candy right? LOL I have a kind of old set up. Its a Netgear RP314 with an Airlink 101 AP (AP431W). It all has worked fine for years and everything else connects to it just fine. I'm wondering if its that Broadcom Wireless Utility?

Are you close to a local hot spot? You might try & see if you can connect there. Libraries usually have it now.

I had a problem with the Broadcom card that came with my Mini 9 in that it would not get an IP address from my router. Everything else I had worked fine, and that card worked fine elsewhere. I ended up replacing the card and then, later, the router (for other reasons). The suggestion to try the Mini somewhere else is good.

Yes I believe I pooched my AP. If you don't mind, I am going to go into a rant about that, lol. I should not have touched it. No I shouldn't have. It had worked for years and I of course changed the password on it to secure it, but forgot what I changed it to all those years ago. So, I hit the reset switch. Got in it and now it is unresponsive. I think I only payed like $30 for it (Airlink 101 AP431W). So, no big loss. It served me well for many years. I've been looking to upgrade my network for some time now. The problem was not the Mini of course once again. I can connect to open networks (That is what lead me to look at my own set up). I did try something new to me though since I now have a smart phone. I am currently tethered to my phone and I know that will work in a pinch. (Post via Virgin Mobile for a test.)

From what I have seen sofar, any SSD will fail because of the Heat. The design flaw is the MINI 9 is small and can not move the heat.

The SSDs tend to brick them selfs without warning or reason.

If this is the case, your in luck. Just follow the links!

STEC 8GB SSD 0MB in BIOS

From 8GB to 64GB SSD, that TT can help.

If not send me hate mail, but is now confirmed over 4 different size SSDs, starting with:
8GB STEC
to
64GB STEC

Same one sold for parts on ebay:
Dell Mini 9 STEC 64GB SSD 0F462N - For Parts or Repair - Inspiron 910 | eBay

Thats not my page but same SSD I recovered now knowing the fix.
Confirmed, I know the issue and resolution, to this outgoing problem with MINI 9.

If you only have the choice of buying a new one or did that and still getting the same problem, then try the above.

Thanks,
Tim
