Default can`t install windows - 07-16-2011, 11:45 PM

i brought a dell inspiron 910 from a computer shop, it was a second hand machine and i knew the hard drive needed to be replaced when i brought it, i can load linux ubuntu 10.04 onto the ssd or an external hard drive without a problem, but i need to use programs that only work with windows, every time i try to put windows onto the machine it fails to copy the setup files, and i have tried xp home, pro and windows 7, the machine has a 16gig ssd and 2gig of ram, do i need a third party driver to install windows, or should i put a hammer to the ****ing thing and get another better non dell computer.

I would have expected Windows 7 to be ok. I have heard of some issues with generic XP install discs. I have installed Windows 7 onto my Mini 9 multiple times without issue. No third-party driver should be necessary. What source are you using for the Windows install: CD/DVD or a USB drive?

I had a similar problem with one USB optical drive, I tried a different one and it worked but only with an original, non burned windows xp sp2 disk and not my slipstreamed xp sp3 I had burned which worked fine everywhere else.

i see a trend here, it looks to me like i can throw in any version of linux even if it`s half missing by the sounds of it and it will load and work, but windows and anything less than perfection and it doesn`t won`t to know, no wonder i never had a chance, windows is crap when you can get it to behave, and perfection isn`t a word i would use to discribe any version of windows, so i`m going to reinstall ubuntu and get rid of the worthless piece of rubbish before i get any more trouble from it, my versions of windows are home burned to blank cd rom, same with windows 7, xp pro sp3 is on a genuine dell reinstallion cd the same ones they ship with the netbook when you buy it new, and everything works fine on every other computer and laptops i own.

I've had a really good experience with Ubuntu also. There are a few exceptions though. My son has installed 11.04 & loves it but Netflix requires Windows . He will be dual booting just so he can watch streaming videos - to bad Netflix won't adopt Linux as well.

If the Dell restore CD doesn't work, then I'd suspect a hardware problem. That just does an "image restore".

Never had a problem installing either XP or Win7 on my Mini 9.

i`ve just noticed i never posted a follow up message to this thread, i`ve managed to fix the problems i replaced the motherboard with another board brought of ebay, and it still reported the same issues when trying to reinstall xp, i put the 1 gig memory stick back in and it loaded without problems, after installing service pack 3 i put the 2gig stick back in and it`s been fine ever since, i use it to play music and flv files from youtube, i even have command and conquer red alert 2 on the hard drive working fine, i don`t know if the other board is damaged, it would be differcult to test without taking a working machine to pieces and while it works i`ll leave it alone, anyone know of any good c++ programs and tutorials, i`ve tried 2 or 3 now and i couldn`t even get hello world to work, not even in the microsoft version.

I would expect Microsoft Visual C++ Express to work fine, though you might also have to install the Windows SDK. What went wrong?
