My guess is that Windows is trying to use the same drive letter for both. With just the HD plugged in, go to Administrative Tools and then Disk Management. Right click on the USB HD device and select Change Drive Letter. Change the letter to something higher (such as X or T). Now see if the DVD drive can coexist.
Now when I go into Disk Management it only shows one of the 2 (DVD-RW or HD)
I have both plugged in but only the DVD appears as drive E.
If I unplug the DVD then the HG appears as F.
This is strange to me that only one will show at a time.
