Re: Mini 9 Survived 3 Foot Fall - 01-20-2009, 10:48 AM
i have dropped my dell mini 9 twice, but the first time was the one that was really bad. i was walking in front of glendale galleria mall (california) when i noticed that my shoelaces were untied, i stopped, put the my dell mini 9 in my armpit, bent to tie my shoelaces, it slipped and hit the concrete floor. i'm not very tall, 5ft 8in, but as i make the motion right now, it looks like it's definitely 3 feet or more.
it hit the left corner tip left (front) of the trackpad if you're facing the screen. the dent is still there. i had to push/squeezed the top of the LCD lid back together as it cracked open. the side case on top of the SD memory slot was also cracked open which i also squeezed to close. other than those, no other visible problems. it was on sleep mode at the time, and turned it on and came up to where i was. no problems since. if it had problems, i'd have thought it was the armpit that did it....
second time i dropped it, i was drinking with some buddies, i was online to check email and moving the netbook to make room for the drink, it slipped off the table, hit one of those table foot rest and i caught it and pinned it. i guess i wasn't drunk. it was on at the time. no problems.

I had dropped mine once also. I had just gotten a new laptop case for it, and the first time I went to pick it while my mini was in the case, it fell right out because I had forgotten to zipper it closed. No adverse effects from about a 4.5 ft fall onto a medium thick carpet.
So I take it no one has really damaged their mini by dropping it?
You guys know the saying...."The bigger they are the harder they fall." The opposite is true too.

Allright, well I don't have a story about my Mini freefalling from the top of a building to the pavement without any damage, but I am heartened to hear of the durability of the device. I have always felt as though the construction of this unit was solid, this thread bears me out. The other netbooks that I have encountered seem flimsy.
That being said, I would like to see a tackier or rubberized outer skin for the Mini. Does anyone have this?

I had purchased about 10 of these, and its just luck of the draw.
What I did on all the ones that were even a tinsy bit loose (just use your thumbs to see if you can make it move at all) is get a thin strip of black electrical tape and put it in the battery slot. This material is a little more squishy and has higher friction than glossy plastic. It'll make the battery fit very snug while still allowing it to slide in and out easily if you have a spare.
I didn't find it necessary to apply on both sides of any of the batteries, so just put it on the slightly loose side if you have one.
