Default Choosing New Operating System - 06-02-2010, 12:22 AM

I am sick of windows, want to install a new operating system on my dell mini 9.

I am looking for just basic needs, but want speed and performance.

Options I am considering are:
Ubuntu 10.04 Remix LTS
Lucid Linux 10.4
Meebo
Fedora 13

I want to optimize the operating system for an SSD. Any thoughts/ any other operating system suggestions?

I thought meebo is a web chat cilent?

I am using the new Ubuntu Netbook Edition (UNE 10.04), it's fast, optimized for netbooks, and has a small harddrive footprint. The only thing that you need off the default install to get things working is the automatically detected wifi driver (proprietary).

If you are always net connected, have a look at chromium or Google Chrome.
Otherwise, try the Linux netbook flavours, they're free. OS X is also fast and nice to work with, and the price of Snow Leopard is really good. But beware of the system update 10.6.3, it doesn't work well with NetbookInstaller.

Some netbook linuxes may need some ripening -- eg. the window of disk utility in Ubuntu Netbook Remix doesn't scroll and some window areas are not accessible. Just a matter of months till they fix it, I guess.

Probably meant Meego, yet another of these silly-sounding Linux names, which make it difficult for me to take Linux seriously. I preferred the name Moblin.

I have had a good experience with 10.04 but the beauty of Linux is that you are not stuck with a version. There are other versions that might better meet your personal preferences & you get the chance to explore them. You might consider Mint 9 as well.

I don't know of anything wrong with Win7 or Snow Leopard except cost (& size if you are on a 4 GB SSD like me ).

Post back with the version you install & you can then optimize for your SSD. It doesn't need much.

windows 7 has been the best experience by far for an operating system and it does a great job of optimizing for ssd use. BUT i have heard GREAT things about linux mint.

+1 for Linux Mint. I had it installed on my spare Mini 9 and was very impressed with it. I sold my spare a few months ago, but I still play around with Mint occasionally using a Live USB on my remaining Mini 9 and 10v. It's a very elegant distro - you should definitely give it a shot!
