Boot Windows XP from a Flash Drive - 05-01-2010, 01:28 PM
Has anyone had any success putting Windows XP on a Flash Drive to run on a Mini-9 AND get network connectivity?
As per another post:
unpleasant surprise ... won't boot
I previously had success with installing "Ubuntu NetBook Remix 9.10" on a USB Thumb Drive and (via the instructions in that post) got Internet connectivity through my router.
That got me wondering if the same thing could be done with putting Windows XP on a flash drive.
Some searching around showed that it was indeed possible to boot Windows XP from a flash drive, but I found most of the instructions for doing so to be either semi-literate gibberish or just plain wrong.
A few times when I thought I had success the flash drive wouldn't boot -- returning various errors.
I finally succeeded by following this procedure:
1. Installed BartPE to a desktop PC and ran it to create the Windows XP folder/files on the hard drive;
2. Downloaded the Lan drivers pack from driverspack.net, extracted all the individual drivers, and copied the lot to: \pebuilder3110a\drivers\Net
3. Ran PeToUSB to format/prepare the USB drive and automatically copy the BartPE files (created in step one) across to it.
This does result in a bootable flash drive which loads Windows XP on the Mini-9, but I don't know how to proceed to get connectivity to my router.
With the XP environment running on the Mini-9 I followed the menu sequence:
System --> Network --> Load Network Support (DHCP/Auto)
and that script ran to completion without errors, but I have no idea what to do next.
Anyone "been there done that"?

I've used UBCD4WIN with good results. It's simple to build, automatically enables network connectivity with most NICs, even wireless, and includes several browsers. Admittedly, I have not tried USB booting yet, but many others are reporting positive results.
