dealbreaker? - 12-30-2008, 03:48 PM
I'm looking for a solution to my lack of satisfaction with my 1GB/16 GB Windows XP.
Here's the deal.
When surfing the 'net, I like to listen to talk radio.
My Dell Mini9, when listening here (for example):
http://www.xtrasportsradio.com/cc-commo ... reshed=yes
...like clockwork, loads the above page very slowly, but then the audio comes on...and is perfect...for about 20 seconds.
Then it buffers for a short time...the audio returns for a few seconds...then silence as it buffers again.
I can take the slow webpage loading...but the choking on streaming audio (it is not high bandwidth)...is likely to be a dealbreaker for me.
My home network is 802.11b Netgear that works with everything...Mac OS X, XP, Vista, PS3, PSP etc. The old warhorse damn near streams (compressed) HD video.
My favorite browser is Firefox; the buffering problem occurs when using the players on various stations.
I plan to hook up the Mini9 via ethernet later today to eliminate wireless as a part of the problem. I also plan to try out a different wireless setup at a local hangout.
In the meantime, would a forum user be so kind as to try the above link or some other streaming radio station, with their own Mini9, and report back?

For what it's worth, I was able to listen to the stream you linked to for over five minutes with no buffering, using IE7.
For the record, my Mini9 is running XP Pro, loaded from a Dell OS CD, Service Pack 3, 2GB of RAM, no swap file.
Network is wireless 802.11g, provided by my router/firewall, an old Dell Optiplex running pfSense.
Edit: My initial network connection was to someone else's Linksys B wireless, somehow the Linksys SSID got above my home network SSID, and my Mini9 decided to use a neighbor's connection first.
I've listened to a couple of talk/newsradio streams in the office, and have never noticed any buffering, either via wireless or wired network, using either IE7 or Winamp. I can't test Firefox, mainly because after installing VLC, it broke streaming in Firefox...
