Default "New" Linux Offering: Karmic 9.10 w/ KDE 3.5 - 03-03-2010, 08:13 PM

There's a "new" Linux distribution available as a 1.2GB *.iso download.

Based on Kubuntu "Karmic Koala" 9.10 with KDE 3.5, it's been optimized for netbooks, specifically tested on the Dell Mini 9s with good results and noticeably faster boot times than either the "Netbook Remix" or Windows.
It can be used as a "live" operating system, run directly off of a DVD or thumb drive.

Described as an "alpha" release, it's probably more accurately described as a "late beta".

Check out some of the features;

Whoa, got thrown back to 1998 for a while there. Screenshots, minimum specs, etc? I'm not confident about the download at all.

Default There's a forum... - 03-05-2010, 03:06 AM

The current iso has been optimized for netbooks; a desktop version is coming shortly.
I've got the netbook flavor installed on an old T-22 Thinkpad, where it runs fine, probably better than the Ubuntu 6.xx I used to have on it.
The T22 has a Pentium III 900 MHz & 512MB ram, and I really wouldn't recommend going any leaner than that.
I've got 2 Mini 9s, one came with XP, the other with the "Dellbuntu" and the PhoenixOS boots & runs quite noticeably faster than Hardy or XP ever did.

There's a new forum at: Free forum : PhoenixOS Forums (just been up a couple-few weeks)
Old forum is at: Phoenix OS Forums - Index

The PhoenixOS project is essentially a 1-man show.

Lets see if I can upload a screenshot...

I think the reason for using KDE 3.5 is because it has lower overhead than the upper versions of KDE. And just because a piece of software isn't the latest/greatest doesn't mean it is useless. KDE developers have been having issues with the bloat of the latest versions of KDE, making it a turn-off for many of the KDE userbase...this is why some are still using KDE or migrating to other DEs.

True. 3.5 is lower on resources. I still have a couple of lenny boxes on 3.5. I am currently running Kubuntu 9.1 without too much issue on the mini 9. The next version with kde 3.4 should run even better.
