Default Help to Diagnose a Problem - 02-15-2010, 07:53 PM

I have a Dell Mini 9. Upon booting, I get "A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart".

I've searched and it said it's just a bad hard drive. So replace the hard drive and I'm good?

I took it to Future Shop and they said it might also be the motherboard. Just because he couldn't reload the OS onto it. I'm not entirely sold on the fact that it's the motherboard too. Is there any way I can tell if the motherboard is bad too?

If the OS can't be installed, it sounds more serious than a software problem.

Try reseating the SSD, maybe it's loose and you can fix it for free. If that doesn't work, I expect the problem is either the motherboard or SSD (the Mini 9 only uses SSDs, not hard drives, but the error diagnosis process is the same). The SSD is more likely to be the problem in my opinion.

Unfortunately, there's no way of discovering with certainty which piece is the problem, unless you have a friend with a Mini 9 to swap parts with.

Good luck.
