Question New Vostro A90 Owner -- OS, SSD Questions - 12-09-2009, 04:02 PM

Hey all,

I've been following this forum since I purchased my Vostro A90 from Dell this Black Friday '09. It is the 16GB SSD version with Ubuntu pre-installed.

I'm not a fan of Ubuntu and am debating between 3 operation systems that I have.

1. Google Chrome OS
2. Windows XP Professional
3. Windows 7 Professional

I noticed Dell has no driver support for Windows 7 for neither the Mini 9 or Vostro A90; what's the compatibility like with the default Windows drivers?

On to the SSD. I'm looking at upgrading to a 32GB SSD. Is the Runcore proven to be faster than the Super Talent? Super Talent to me is a better name--they make decent sticks of memory, but I've never heard of Runcore until I purchased the A90. Is there any legitimate stores that sell the Runcore? I'm a little hesitant purchasing these from eBay--especially since flash memory is so easy to fake!

Windows 7 makes it 98% supported after install. The only things left over (IIRC) are the function keys, 2/3rds of the memory card slot (SD works after install), and the "smart" battery. There are drivers/software from Dell will make it fully hardware compatible.

Will all the function keys work? Like, to dim the screen or increase the volume?

If I remember correctly (I sold my Mini 9 to my boss, and he's not here right now), all of the Fn keys worked properly including the wireless switch.

The "function keys" issue is for the special Fn-x keys that bring up the battery meter and wireless switch. These work once you have installed the appropriate software. Other Fn-x combinations work without OS support.

A list of the additional drivers you need is in the Windows 7 Guides section.

Thanks. I'll probably give Windows 7 a shot and see how it runs. Now I just need to decide whether to go with the larger SSD or not. Reading some of the recent posts in this forum discourages me from investing in one. I guess a lot of people are having issues with their drives failing: that's not good.

As far as I know there have been no reports (yet) of Super Talent failures, so that is the one I'd go for, though I'm reluctant to continue spending money on my M9s as its pata ssd looks like a dead end. I wish manufacturers would stop at 32 GB and make them cheaper, rather than pushing to ever bigger and more expensive capacities.

I installed Windows XP SP2 and then updated to SP3 last night. It took a long time.

I can't figure out where to get the SMBus Card drivers for the system. Dell doesn't have them listed.

I have 4.8GB left of 14.5GB after installing Dell Drivers, Windows XP SP3, and Microsoft Office 2007. I may re-install Windows and load only Microsoft Works 9 instead to save space. Anyone try Google Chrome OS?

I believe you want the "JMicron" driver.
