Default RAM or SSD? - 11-29-2009, 10:57 AM

Hi,

I want to tune my DM9, but I can't make a descision which way would be the best for my "problem".

The speed to load something is slow as hell, so for me it isn't a nice way to work with it. A bit of money is free in this month, so I would like to spend it to the DM. Now the question is: What will the Mini makes faster? 2Gb of Ram or a SuperTalent SSD? I could take a 16GB SuperTalent and the 2GB Ram or I only take a 32GB SSD.
@ the moment its build in 1GB Ram and the STEC 8GB SSD.

I hope, you understand my englisch, isn't that great by writing.

Nice regards,

Jann

I would say that the 32GB SSD is the best choice. Small SSDs are slower and you will probably see better speedup from a faster SSD.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04....I've picked up the maximum out of the system. Minimal startup programms, /tmp (20% max of ram); /var/log (2% of ram) and /tmp/log (2% of ram) are on ramdisk and the Firefox is also tuned for netbook-working....So I can't get anymore out of the OS.

So, it'll be better to buy first a new ssd and later new ramdisk???

I would also suggest that a new SSD is the way to go. I've upgraded 2 of my M9s with 2 GB of RAM, and did not notice any speed-up at all, though being a man I can only do one thing at a time (i.e. usually only 1 program is running).

So, everything is done! I've got the Supertalent 32GB and a new 2GB Kingston-Ram as well!

Both together makes a simlpy new Netbook for me! Everything runs faster and looks more liquid!

Now, my desktop-computer is never used :-)

The DM9 is running with Ubuntu 9.04, 9.10 has a bug with non-stock SSDs and will maybe destroy the SSD!!!

Boottime with the Supertalent is about 13 seconds, GDM login is about 20 seconds, so everything runs perfect!

Nice regards and thanks for help!
