Default Booting from SD card (progress w/Wubi & alternate drivers) - 12-05-2008, 01:18 PM

I used the Hitachi Microdrive Drivers to make my Mini think the SD card was a fixed disk. This allowed the Windows Unbuntu Installer (Wubi) to see the SD card and install to it. After it installed, I rebooted and was given a choice of what OS I wanted to boot from, I chose Ubuntu and it only booted to the GRUB prompt.

I thought this might be viable method since the Mini is actually booting from the SSD and the Windows boot.ini just points to the installation of Wubi. But it appears that the Mini cannot even see the SD card until an OS is loaded. I also checked BIOS to see if I had another fixed disk, but it only showed the SSD.

I have attached the Hitachi Microdrive Drivers (thanks to 910 GT), if anyone needs/wants to set their SD card to a fixed disk. Just extract the contents. Go into device manager, and right click the JMicron SD card and update the driver. On the following screens make sure you pick, 1) No, not this time. 2) Install from a list of specific location (Advanced) 3) Don't search, I will choose the driver to install. Next click, HAVE DISK and point to the extracted files and choose cfadisk.inf. After this is done, reboot and your SD card will show up as a fixed drive. Mine was D:/ If you want to revert the changes, just roll back the driver reboot and your SD card will show up again as removable storage.

So,are you saying that we can boot Windows from the SSD,then use it to boot Linux from the SD card?

That was what I was trying to accomplish, but it didn't work. I just ended up at the prompt for GRUB. When I typed
Code:
find /boot/grub/stage1
I got an Error 15: File not found. Which leads me to believe that the SD card is not even being seen at this point. Maybe someone with a little more Linux experience can build on some of the information I have posted and make it work.

well, the card reader cant be seen from a BIOS standpoint,so whatever system you are using, has to have a driver for the card reader to work

you can place a partition just big enough for "/" mount and put /home on the sd card and install all future software to home directory. and this will boot fine but it will depend on the distro to the size of the "/" partition.
