Unhappy Mini 9 XP Product Keys - 10-03-2009, 09:08 PM

I have three Mini 9s. The XP Product Key (per Jelly Bean) is the same for all three, whereas the Mini 9 bottom label Product Key is different for all three. Can someone please explain this to me?

Thanks much

Dell preloads an image of XP that is the same for all systems - and essentially what is on the restore CD. It does not use the product key from the sticker. The sticker is your certification of a license, even though the product key registered on the system may be different.

to add to that, there are 4 files in your windows>system32 folder that allow this key to pre-activate on any system with a Dell bios. All 4 files are labeled oembios but have different extensions. Almost every oem does this, they have their own 4 filesets, and a "VLK" (Volume License key)

It's a good thing that they have the product keys on the restore cd and do not require you to re-enter it, seeing as how the product key on the certificate is all but gone now. Least ways in my case that is.

Dell Mini 9 Obsidian 2GB RAM Windows XP, Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS on 4 GB USB Stick.
