Question Can't install a new Windows XP on an used Dell Mini (Inspiron Mini 9 (910)) - 09-23-2009, 05:58 PM

Hello.

I have an used Dell Mini (Inspiron Mini 9 (910)) netbook. I am trying to install a new Windows XP on it with an external USB DVD drive, but it is failing because asms cannot be found from CdRom0\I386.

I researched online and this seems to be a common issue. One trick is to do shift-F10 to open up a command prompt, so I tried to find the DVD drive, but couldn't find it. I think Windows XP installer forgot drive source after it rebooted from its text installer screen into its GUI installer. I already tried multiple discs, burns, service packs, and another drive. How do I get this installed? I do not have the original XP Home CD that this netbook came with according to the service tag on the bottom of it.

Thank you in advance.

Are you prompted to find the location of the file?

I believe it is a um, typo issue with SP3.

When prompted for the directory to find that file, it should say something like
E:\I386\asms file not found, browse to find file

You just, if memory serves, change the I to a lower case i in 386 and tell it to search there.

Took me some googlefu to figure it out the first time I ran into it.

Oh, it did have E: drive this time. Last time, I couldn't find it. I replaced \cdrom0\ with e:\. This seems to work so far... Thanks.

Sheesh, too many inputs (copy and paste of e:\i386). Isn't there a better way to install old XP?

Also, is there a way to download and install XP drivers all at once from http://support.dell.com/support/down...ID=inspiron910 ?

Question Can't install with XP Pro. SP0 CD? - 09-24-2009, 10:25 PM

Is it me or is XP Pro. not installable from its CD if it doesn't have any service packs (not slipstreamed with any SPs)? I keep getting blue screen (stop error) during its installation. All it did was load drivers during its blue text installer screen. I haven't told it to install where to either. I had no problems with SP2 and SP3.

Pre-service pack XP Pro does not have the right drivers, apparently.
