Welp - my unit shipped. I purchased the Mini 9 in Obsidian black w/ 512mb ram, Ubuntu, higher quality webcam, blue tooth, and 4GB SSD. I ordered the small SSD and ram because I am going to add 2GB ram and 32 or 64GB ssd later. I wish they had the 32GB option when I had ordered, but it was only 4, 8, or 16 GB at the time. I don't have the unit yet, probably later this week though technically its a christmas gift.. so we'll see.

I also just ordered:
  • A-Data Class 6 SDHC 16GB
    G.Skill 2GB F2-4200CL4S dimm
    Microsoft 72R Bluetooth notebook mouse

speaking of ubuntu - does the unit take the 8.10 x86 ISO easily? I really like 8.10 over 8.04. Does the Mini 9 have enough hardware to run Compiz?

You'll have to verify on the Ubuntu forums but I do believe that the upgrade to 8.10 requires you to forego Dell's installation of Ubuntu. I ran Dell's 8.04 with no issues and Compiz worked great on it. I had a lot of fun with compiz as it was the first time I had used it. Wobbly windows and cube transition while dragging windows is totally awesome.

When i got my Dell I promised myself I would give Ubuntu at least a weeks worth of use, but 3 days later it had OS X on it.
But both the Ubuntu and OS X community on here are very helpful resources.

I actually run ubuntu on my desktop and like it so i am not worried about my compatibility with ubuntu, except that I really do want to use this laptop to tune my bmw which only has software under windoze... but I guess I could run virtualbox.
