Exclamation Mini 9 won't boot! - 08-22-2009, 10:50 AM

I am receiving this a page on boot that says

Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 082)
Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation

For Realtek RTL8101E/8102E PCI-E Ethernet Controller v1.08 (080408)

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.
Operating System Not Found

Can't figure out where to go from here. I tried to reinstall but it won't read or write to the SSD anymore. I have two Mini 9's and this has happend to both of them now.

I used the dellefi method and this happend after updating to 10.5.8

The BIOS is not finding a bootable system on the disk and is trying to boot over Ethernet (and failing, understandably). That's the PXE stuff.

Possibly your SSD is hosed. If you bring up the BIOS setup screen (press 2 during the initial boot screen), does it show the SSD with the correct capacity?

Sounds like the update trashed your boot loader.

If you have a USB thumb drive with DellEFI and a boot loader on it, boot with that and re install DellEFI. I would recommend version 1.2.5a.

This happened to me when I updated, the SSD was fine, the Mini just didn't know how to boot it.

Yes it show the correct SSD volume.

How would I go about making the USB with Dellefi and bootloader?

Follow one of these methods. It depends on the computers on hand to make the thumb drive-

Did you run DellEFI?
If you have a USB thumbdrive set up already, use it to boot up and run DellEFI as I mentioned earlier.

Since you have 10.5.8 installed, you will probably get an error message, ignore it. DellEFI hasn't been updated since 10.5.6, but it still works.

Choose custom install, and install Chameleon ( it's the first option )

Since you upgraded to 10.5.8 to cause all this, while you are in DellEFI and doing a custom install, remove the custom dsdt.aml, and reinstall the Dell Mini 9 extensions, then when done, DO NOT REBOOT.

Run DellEFI again, Custom install, generate custom dsdt.aml. When it is finished, shut down and re-start.

Now, go into BIOS and disable USB Legacy. Everything should be back to normal.

Help! I had the same problem as Jedo10 and am not nearly as versed in the practices mentioned above!

When I boot in the BIOS I always get a system time of 03:00 and the system date is correct. The rest is:
BIOS Version: A01
CPU Type: Intel (R) Atom(TM) CPU N270
CPU Speed: 1600Mhz
CPU Cache Size: 512KB
CPU ID: 106C2
Product Name: Inspiron 910
Fixed HDD: None
System Memory: 640 KB
Extended Memory: 502 MB

I bought this on the internet as a refurb over a year ago and I don't have any manuals or software. It had Linux/Ubuntu on it, which was a bit of a nightmare getting used to but really I just used it for email, facebook, messing around; nothing serious. My 11 yr old son enjoyed the games that were on it.

Potentially good news, I cried out about my sorrows on facebook and a friend of mine told me she had experienced the same. She bought a 32GB SSD but had to call Dell support for guidance because evidently the 32GB SSD didn't have anything (or at least not an operating system) on it so they dispatched her a new 8GB with Windows on it already. Then, a friend was able to help her get the 32GB up and running. So, this wonderful friend is going to send me the 8GB SSD that Dell sent her.

Is it just a fantasy, or could I possibly install the new SSD and then just crank her up and get back to my business of emailin' and facebookin'???

Thank you!

The "Fixed HDD: None" message indicates that the SSD has died. You could purchase and install a new SSD, but you would still need to install an operating system. It would not be legal for you to use your friend's SSD. You could install it and see if the system booted, to at least eliminate other sources of error. Of course, you would then have Windows XP and not Linux, and 8GB is very tight in space for XP.

If you bought a new SSD, you could download a Linux install that could be put on a USB flash drive and use that to reinstall Linux.
