Default "Firefox OS": A project I'll be experimenting with anyone interested? - 08-19-2009, 08:39 PM

So after seeing all of this chrome OS buisness...I figured why not make my own super light linux install based only on firefox!? I saw gizmodo did something similar...but practically all they did was make firefox boot at startup. This is a bit more true to the concept.

Here is my plan...I'll install Linux Mint XFCE. Next I'll create a folder with shortcuts to all the apps I'll be wanting to use. Make Firefox boot on startup. Find an add-on that makes it go fullscreen automatically or create a javascript to do so. Install google gears and set up my stuff to run offline. Create a custom website that will be located on the local HDD. This homepage will look like a desktop, and link to all of your programs google apps, all that good stuff. Find a Firefox filemanager add-on. Stop most all other processes from starting at boot so then firefox will pretty much be the only thing running.

And BAM...your basically doing everything from within firefox, with barely anything else running make this installation VERY VERY lightweight. I'm even going to try to place the "homepage" in my dropbox, and save most other files there, that way I can access my Firefox OS from any computer! Of course this would be more of a double boot thing, that runs along side my OSX partition. Just for quick boot up to the web!

Seems like a good idea!? What do you guys think? if enough people are interested I'll make a guide(with pics or a vid) on how to do it. It would truthfully only take about 10-20min from start to finish.

PS-I know there is a linux section...but NO ONE ever posts there.

Sounds interesting. I would try out a Live CD for sure. You probably already know but incase you don't you could use Prism and make websites into clickable shortcuts on the desktop or program launcher somewhat like GOS does. But you could probably improve on their design which was pretty neat but the use of it leaves a lot to be desired.

Ya, haha i'm trying it out on a vm first. Aha don't need prism, because, the "homepage" would be the "desktop", complete with shortcuts to most all important apps. no need for any programs(including the desktop) other than firefox running! gonna finish up the site this weekend and try it out.

Why use Linux Mint as the base? It is very bloated if all you want is a browser.

Check out SliTaz (30mb) or BrowserPuppy (60mb). Either of those options would take up less than 10% the hard drive space of Mint, plus boot faster, run faster, etc.

I hope this has not been dropped because I would like to try it on a USB stick or SD card. I think it would be very interesting.

Just yesterday I tried running xPUD on my Mini 9, booted from a USB-stick. This relies heavily on FireFox. Boots really quick and runs even quicker, but unfortunately I couldn't get it to install Flash. Would've been great for some light browsing and viewing YouTube.
