Default WinXP Product Key Rubbed Off - 08-06-2009, 03:54 AM

So I'm sitting here trying to reinstall windows XP on my Dell mini 9 and I get to the screen where you have to enter a product key and I don't have one. The problem is it is located on the bottom of the computer. Somehow the print has rubbed off and is completely unreadable. What should I do? Contact Dell?

yes, contact Dell. You should not need the key as the one that comes from Dell that is pre-installed (and I verified it is on the cd as well) is a volume key. The key on the bottom is typically unused. Are you installing a different CD than the factory one?

You do not need a product key if you're using a Dell XP disk. If you have a Dell XP disk, boot up to the CD from the Boot Menu.

Can confirm the above that an official Dell OEM XP SP3 install CD requires no key/activation!

I had the same issue with my product key rubbing off, but if you call the help desk and argue a little they'll send you a brand new key. And it's not a hard sell to get a new key, the help desk said the same thing everyone else is saying about not needing it for a re-install, but I told them that I paid for it and I want to make sure I have the key "just in case". They finally relented after about 5-10 minutes of discussion. You'll have to remove the old key and mail that back to them in the supplied envelope. I now store my XP key in a desk drawer to avoid having the same issue again.

Mine :

Mine started rubbing off and i wrote the number down and removed the label.

If someone is that interested in the validity of my key they can call Dell and petition them to look it up themselves.

Nice to know I'm not the only one with this issue, and that I won't need the product key to reinstall Windows.
