Default Battery Life OS X vs. Windows vs. Linux? - 08-01-2009, 07:05 PM

Just trying doing a little battery life comparison, I can't seem to find it on other threads:

Wondering what battery life people are getting (using stock 4 cell) under different operating systems. (try to include settings, usage, anything special).

OS X, Windows XP, Windows 7, Ubuntu 9.04 NR, Ubuntu 9.04, Other

I finally ran mine into the ground on Thursday.

I got 3 hours 30 minutes running Windows 7 before the Mini 9's alarm went off -- it was streaming XM Radio the entire time using the WLAN connection (volume at 25%), plus occasional web browsing.

i can easily get 4+ house using Archlinux with MPD for audio, pekwm window manager, midori browser wifi on, brightness 50% and volume 35%. Takes time to get the system to perform right however. Also have to tweak alot of settings to stop writes to disk, disable the webcam and unused features, and then keep the system as clean as possible, no icons, no wallpaper, no colours or themes for windows. Also underclocked the CPU to a permanent 800mhz under linux. Best battery life i got is using command line with links2, vga disabled, brightness 0, volume 35% seemed to last forever think it was like 4hours 45mins ish, but cant be too sure as i didnt have a clock or battery monitor on the dell then..

Over 4 hours last time I checked with Ubuntu 9.04. Normal settings, watched a couple flash videos, a little browsing, ect. Screen at around 30% brightness.

About 3.5hrs, web browsing and playing music on and off with Ubuntu 9.04, screen at maybe 70% brightness, screen off after 2min idle, commit interval of 32 seconds on system partition, Firefox disk cache set to RAM disk.

Close to four hours? I've ran mine (OSX 10.5.6) from full charge to dead a number of times, but I've never bothered to actually time it, but I do know I get something close to four hours, screen at 3/4 brightness, browsing the web using wifi the entire time. I get the feeling that the brightness of the LED backlight affects battery life far less than on CCFL backlit screens, but I have no data to back that up, so I'd be curious to know the answer.

3.5 hours on OpenBSD with apmd running xfce. Wifi drivers for broadcom crap don't exist, so no wifi. Just left it closed running a shellscript in an Xfce Terminal window to record the time every minute starting the moment the AC adapter was unplugged from a full charge. Last entry in the log was almost exactly 3.5 hours after the first entry.

Based on my usage I'm looking at about 3.5 hours of real world "doing stuff".

If I'm just watching videos maybe less, but if i'm doing that I'll typically shut off wireless to save power.
