Angry No matter what I do, I can't install XP - 08-01-2009, 02:22 PM

Ive been trying to install xp in many different ways, but it keeps failing.
I have an external dvd drive, but when i try to install xp from that, i get up to the part where you get the gui, but it says i need the file "asms". I read up about that, and it says that means there is something wrong with the dvd drive. Then i tried to copy the contents of the install disk to my main computer, but gives me some error about usmtdef.inf. Since I cant copy the contents, I cant install with a usb drive or try nliting it.
PLEASE, THIS IS DRIVING ME CRAZY!!

Is there ANY way i can install xp?

Could be your XP CD is bad. Also, problems with USB drives on the Mini are common if it is not getting enough power. Use the USB slot closest to the power connector. If your drive has the option of a separate power cable, use it, connected to an AC-USB power adapter.

But if you also get an error copying on your PC, then I'd lean towards suspecting the CD.

hmm... i tried it, but it doesnt seem to work. when i get to the stage where theres the asms error, i enter in d: instead of CDRomO/i386.
i click ok, but nothing happens.
i didnt do those things in the bios, so i will do those and will be back soon.

I just got a new 16GB SSD and did a fresh install. This time when I entered "D:" it didn't work either!!!! Go figure!!! However, after cancelling the installation and rebooting XP was able to see the drive just fine.

It's really peculiar. I've had sketchy luck installing XP on laptops that didn't come with XP factory restore disks. It's trippy.

the only times I have ever got these type of errors are when either the install disk is damaged, or the drive is lacking power.

Im pretty sure the install disk isnt damaged, as there arent any visible scratches or marks on it. As for the drive lacking power, there are two cables. One for power and one for data. However, if i plug the power cable into anything but the netbook, it wont turn on. I have tried plugging the power cable into the usb port right next to the charger plug while the netbook was plugged in, but it didnt work.

try using that drive on a desktop, transfer some files and see if it fails.
I bet it does. some of those drives take a crapload of power to run
