Default mini 9 help with osx install with PC - 07-26-2009, 03:25 PM

I have a mini 9 coming in a few days and I will upgrade to 2GB of memory but it has an 8gb ssd, no cam, no BT, it was only 169. Is there a way to install OSX onto this little guy without a MAC? I have a HP desktop and Dell Inspiron 8200 (from back in the day lol). Im going to purchase the apple sw. I also dont have any usb drives either. Do i need to buy an external drive? Any help is greatly appreciated.

You will need a minimum of 16 gig SSD to do an OS X install.

We have a whole section further down for doing this, it is in the Operating Systems section.

Operating Systems - Mac OS X at MyDellMini

You don't need a mac to do the install, but you will need an external DVD drive ( buy an XBOX 360 HDDVD drive if you can find one on clearance, they are very cheap and work great)

Follow this excellent guide and you should be set.Guide Method 3: Install using External DVD Drive | DellEFI | mechdrew

Default Yes you can - 07-26-2009, 07:22 PM

You need to get two usb flash drives, and check out those guides in the Mac OSX forum below. There is a procedure in there for installing on an 8GB ssd without a Mac. I know it works because... I'm posting this from my 8GB Mini 9 with OSX 10.5.6 on it. Granted, you have to install without some things, but it works flawlessly and once my 64GB ssd gets here, I'll do the normal install with everything that OSX has to offer.

Can you install it with 2 thumb drives instead of a thumb drive and an external dvd drive?

edit: Just saw in the guide that you can use 2 SDHC cards, so I'm going to attempt that route.

Yes you can. Look in the OS X section in "Guides" and there is a tutorial on how to do it.
