Default Win7: To upgrade or not? - 07-03-2009, 05:39 PM

How many of you are planning on upgrading from XP to Windows 7 on your Dell Mini 9? Is there enough of a performance upgrade to justify the $49 upgrade price? Or should I stick with XP for now, and wait for dual core Atom processors and just upgrade the entire system sometime next year?

There is still a week left to get in on MS's Win7 upgrade program, right? I'm on the fence...

I am very impressed with 7. It isnt Vista, thats for sure! It is great eye candy, and seems to run very well on our machines.

BUT...there will always be those that swear by XP. I am on the fence. I went from 98se right into XP, skipping all the others. In fact, I didnt even go into XP until SP1 was out. So yeah, if you like XP stick with it. If you want something new, 7 is pretty cool!

I installed the RC a couple of weeks ago on my mini 9 with the stock 16g ssd. Pre-ordered the day it was available. Runs great with all of the features enabled. Also installed and pre-ordered a copy for my non-aero XPS M140. 7 is a rocket on it also.

Does the mini9 with XP qualify for the $50 upgrade? I saw the notice on Dell's site and didn't see a thing about minis in the list of systems.

Any Win XP machine can take the Win 7 upgrade, as long as it can run the minimum system requirements. You do not need to specifically order the upgrade from Dell, you can order it from anyone. I would suggest the Home Premium Edition for the upgrade. I realize the RC is Win 7 Ultimate, but I don't see why anyone would want to have that or Professional installed onto a Mini. I don't see a big enough difference in features to warrant this. I guess if you have to have XP emulation mode you would need the Professional edition, but other than that, I don't see a need for it.

I think you may be confusing the 7 upgrade available for new systems purchased. The Mini 9 is discontinued so it's not eligible. Anyone can buy the pre-release right now for $50 from a number of online retailers including from Microsoft. Well at least until they "run out".

Oh I forgot to add. I installed the RC and liked it so much I pre-ordered the night it was available. Runs nicely on our little machines.

I get it free from MSDN, but bought the Home Premium upgrade for installation on my Mini (so that when the time comes to sell the Mini, I can include a legit copy of Win7 with it.) Well worth $50 in my view.

Does the upgrade do a clean install or does it require you to install XP first and then install Win7 on top?

No idea. With the beta versions its had to be a clean install.

With a proper upgrade release it must be possible to upgrade from XP to keep users/programs/settings etc.
