I've been having this issue with my new mini12 (with the z530). You might be able to fix this by playing with your battery settings this should keep the CPU in (SpeedStep - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) or with a recent update from intel. As i understand it the recent this is intermittent is that when the CPU is actually trying to up or down the CPU Speed (through windows) the powermanagment freezes it.
I'd appreciate it if anyone who has been suffering along with this could try the fix and verify it worked to solve their issue. Just so we have one or two verified fixes for this.
As I understand it this is only a 1.6Ghz issue.

I imagine there is some similar power management for windows to set the clock speed directly. Does anyone know of one?
These crashes seem to be rare for me. I can't seem to get them to occur unless I have a web browser open. I have not had one crash since setting the frequency, but didn't have one for over a week before that.

I am having the same problem. The unit has been sent back to Dell twice for "repairs" with promises of success but has come back with the same issues. This is not my personal laptop, so I cannot provide details as to what was going on during the hang ups, but it is an event that recurs regardless of Ubuntu Intrepid Netbook Remix (which comes with the mini), and XP Enterprise Edition with all updates and patches. My plan is to contact the Dell Engineering Department and find out exactly what the problem is (if they know). I will try disabling the SpeedStep in BIOS and see if that helps.
The symptoms I can identify are as follows:
HDD is recognized and read (in BIOS and can read Windows)
Windows will load until it gets to different stages at which time it will hang momentarily and bluescreen for less than a second, then reboot
the windows install is 48 hours fresh with no viruses or other malware
booting from a persistent install of Ubuntu Jaunty works well, but graphics quality is crap
HDD can be read and written while booted from persistent install
I will keep this updated as I go if there is an interest.
