Default How to Achieve: MAX performance on Dell Mini 12 RESULTS - 04-27-2009, 04:15 AM

Hi, I been reading this forum countless time to make my dell mini 12 run quicker. I heard of some stupidest technique, like turning off HD acoustic.I tried everything! and XFCE on ubuntu w/ UNR is SLOW! Windows 7 seems to be the quickest OS.

Here's my SPEC Dell mini 12
Z520: 1.3GHz
Ram : 1GB
HD: 40GB 4200
Price:$237.15 Spring outlet sell

In the end the most useful tool I found was overclock the dell mini 12. Here's the link to the tool http://www13.plala.or.jp/setfsb/ . The credit goes to the original poulsbo chipset in Sony vaio P (Link/How to OC @ Source)
WARNING: I'm not liable for anything you do beyond this point, I'm just sharing what WORKED for me.

At first I hit 1.6GHz (542) very unstable laptop froze/blue screen @ Prime 95 test.
Now I'm safely at 1.5GHz and it's stable. A little bit more heat but not much. Compare to my M1340 the heat is NOTHING.
I'm @ 492 = 1502MHz

Results: Window Experience Index

Original stock Vs OcED @ 492 <- this reading is on FSB tool
Processor: 1.9 vs 2.2 (+0.3)
Memory : 4.2 vs 4.4 (+0.2)
Graphic : 2.9 vs 4.5 (+1.6)
Gaming : 2.5 vs 2.7 (+0.2)
Harddrive : 4.1 vs 4.1 (+0.0)

NOTE: The reason everything went up is because it's over clocking the FSB, therefore the entire chip set is getting a boost not just the processor.

PS: I got the Idea from the MSI WIND. It has a TURBO button which boost it's speed from 1.6GHz to 1.9GHz.

Dell Inspiron Mini 12, 1.6 GHz CPU, 1 GB RAM, 40 GB HDD, 3 cell battery, MS Windows Vista.
Want to install internal WWAN modem, replace HDD with SSD or CompactFlash.
P.S. English it is not my native language, so, please, excuse me for its poor quality.

Nice Kuban, I'm surprise it does so well on Vista.

I would Install windows 7 it'll be faster + eye candy from AERO.
I want both the looks and performance of a modern OS without resorting to XP or full blown.
windows 7 is faster with basic but I like my Aero

PS: I upload mine image on my original post

Hmm, your Windows 7 look nice, but Vista have Aero too. Unfortunately, I have a Vista Home Basic without Aero interface in it. Later I will try your tweaking tool and post a result in this topic.
Its interesting, how much Microsoft will take for upgrade from Vista Home Basic to Windows 7? Which versions of Windows 7 will be available?

I just tried the above and were able to increase my Base score from 2.3 to 2.7, not bad.
It seems to be running rock solid!

Running a Mini 12 with the 1.6GHz processor.

my wife has a dell mini 12 with the 1.3ghz atom and its 1.9 rating in 7...

though it was an upgrade from the stock vista install...so i guess first thing first...do a fresh install of 7.

thanks for the links on some overclocking, probably give that a try

There's going to be tons of windows 7 version & I'm pretty shouldn't there isn't going to be a discount. Seeing as microsoft reported their first annually lost. Although the BETA testing is still free. The latest version is 7100 release candidate. Free till august.

PS: I'm glad everyone's getting results .

OP:

I have the same setup you have. After OC to 1.5ghz, the graphic score went from 2.5 to 2.9, nowhere near your 4.4 score. What version GMA500 driver do you use? Did you change idgumd32.dll to a new version?

TIA
