I also have this minor issue. I am testing to mute sound right now.
Yeah, you have to dissasemble the unit. It's explained on Dell's documentation:

Documentation

But, anyway, this NOT solve the problem. I just contacted Dell and I have to send the mini again. This time they will replace the sound card and the speakers another time. I'll mantain you updated.

Well the things ended bad.. I received again the netbook with a letter saying "the computer it's ok, no issues found". Then I've contacted again by mail and they told me "based on the mini12's design, the sound it's ok". So, it's a DESIGN FAULT. And they gave me no solution, the case is closed.

I told they -in a polite way- that I won't buy any Dell product. And this is what I will do. I will try to sell my mini12 cause I'm not satisfied with it.

I hope this helps anyone

That noise really began to drive me crazy!
It is the only issue I have with my Mini 12.

To fix that, I tried to understand the problem. It comes when the sound chip is disabled (for energy efficiency). Then, I try to seek for a solution.

1. First, I checked if it was possible to remove the deactivation when on idle. On Mac OS X, I know that this type of request is possible, but on WinXP, I don't think so.

2. I tried to change as many options as I can in Control Panel, no results.

3. Ultimate solution : Trying to apply as many as possible actions sound in Sound and Audio Device of Control Panel of WinXP. Per example, in Opera (web browser), I add the sound "Windows XP Menu Command.wav" to many actions. Then, when I browse the web, each time I open a page and when the page loading is over, the sound occurs and the windy annoying sound is not.

Anyone has other tips ?

A known issue with realtek sound is static noise.

The common solution is mute PC Beep and/or Aux in Sound Properties Playback

Alternatively, try a different driver. I have read that some drivers do not have problems, but this may just be from the act of changing the driver.

Thanks.

Which driver do you suggest?
I looked at Realtek website, but the provided software isn't a driver only file.

Have you find the solution of changing the driver to fix the issue for yourself (and your Mini 12) ?

My mini 12 sound is fine as I use linux.

Have you tried the PC beep/Aux muting?

I have solved this issue on another laptop with nearly identical realtek and nearly identical whining sound by rolling the driver back to an older version.

I have muted PC beep. Still a windy sound.

The current driver for the Realtek ALC268 is 5.10.0.5688.
I haven't found anything else.

Any links?
