I've read all over the internet about the limits of the Atom Platform now it's time to talk about what it can do. I downloaded PS3 Media Server. While there are still some program bugs I'm trying to work out, it works. Despite the program author recommending a Core 2 Duo for HD I went ahead and installed it on my 1.33 Atom. So far, here's what I've done.
Using Wifi works, but I get stuttering on HD material. So I decided to use wired. HD 720p downloaded from Apple Trailers plays well, except for a delay in the 5.1 audio (takes about 15-25 Sec. to kick in). Aside from that small issue it's perfect, picture looks great and audio in in 5.1 sync. Load was very small for SD Streaming almost no use (3-5% Load) for HD (720p) was a little higher (5-15% load) but still no problem. Now as for transcoding the only thing you will find that, the PS3 really can't handle is .MKV files. So i fired up a SD (720X380 or something close) movie the system load was now 15-55%. Still a useable system, programs were still snappy and worked fine. I will try HD sometime soon, but as I only have a few HD file that need transcoding it's not a major issue for me. I feel it might handle 720p with some software tweaking.
The one thing that bothers me is the wireless internet connection drops once I plug in the LAN (What up with that?) Since the PS3 will only do wired or WiFi, I need to feed the internet to the PS3 through the cable. I can do this with internet connection sharing, but not if I don't have it myself. The PS3 Media Server is for Mac also. So I installed in on a Mac, NO issue with the wireless ( although I haven't got the Server working yet) But I know I have had one wired network and still had wireless internet at the same time, on the Mac. The PC (Dell MINI) drops the WiFi Internet instantly upon inserting the Ethernet cable. Can anyone shed some light on the situation?
