Re: Should I keep my Mini?-A Review - 03-27-2009, 05:37 AM
I play 720p files all the time using VLC. The combo of the 2GB memory and the SSD make up for the perceived low power CPU. The resolution on the smaller screen of the Mini 9 is great. The videos play without delay, stutter, or pixelation.
I have a Macbook and I used to take it everywhere. Now I take the Mini everywhere instead. I have the big battery and I regularly get 8 hours out of a charge.
The difference in how it operates in Windows XP and OSX is like night and day!!!
Runcore 64GB | 2GB RAM | ATP 16GB C6 SDHC | 1.3 Webcam | Bluetooth | OSX 10.5.6 | Fusion w/Windows XP | CrossOver | DellEFI 1.2A5 | BIOS A04 | 77Whr Battery
Will install OSX for Food

Youtube is a completely different beast. Actually, the beast (and it's a BIG one) is Adobe/Macromedia Flash Video Player. Flash video streamed to me through Youtube will play, full screen, at best about 10 FPS and peg out the processor. If I download that same video and watch it full screen with VLC Media Player it's butter smooth and my processor hovers around 70%. This topic has been beaten to death in several threads on this forum. The issue with Youtube is not hardware, Intel, the GMA, the Atom processor or Dell.
The issue is really crappy, lazy and inefficient resource management in the software from Adobe/Macromedia which stems from years of hardware manufacurers releasing ever faster, stronger and more powerful systems than the average user really needs - and Adobe uses your extra processor cycles to fund their lazy programmers.
Once again, I'll remind everyone that the Atom processor is a stripped down Pentium III - You really can't expect your Mini 9 to do anything you wouldn't expect your 1998 vintage computer to be able to do. That it manages to play HD content at all has nothing to do with the Atom and everything to do with the GMA chipset that offloads all of that processing from the Atom to itself. In fact I may dare say that the GMA chips actually do MORE work inside of your Mini 9 than the Atom itself actually does.
