I recently ordered a Dell Mini 12 from Costco.com for $600(ordered Feb-9 delivered Feb-19 Dell had to build it) and it has been a fun investment so far.
Out of the box I was pleased with the build and design of the computer with the exception of the keyboard. There is a black border around the keyboard which had they cleared would have left the option to almost be full-sized!
Booting up was a disappointment at first…I was expecting it to move faster, felt like it took at least 2 minutes to boot to XP. I automatically disabled some items from the taskbar(area next to the clock) which I knew were irrelevant to my needs as well as removing McAfee and other useless programs. By doing this I cut the boot time down to about 1 minute 25 seconds give or take. I also installed XP Antispy, and again modified known things to speed up overall performance. I also recommend firefox version 2, with ad-block plus and fasterfox add-ons for fast web surfing.
The operation of the computer is silent and nearly heat less. I was comparing this to a D420 side by side today and just wished the Mini had used more of the overall space for the keyboard.
In closing, this is a fun netbook(I think it’s a laptop) with the main downfall being a slow hard-drive 4200RPM; quiet yes and slow with it. I have ordered a Runcore 32gb Pro SSD
to install and boost the performance greatly.
Macbook Air distant relative?
Slow for heavy work within applications other then Microsoft Office or Adobe Acrobat
RAM attached to CPU board to limit upgrading RAM until they upgrade the CPU
Could have made the keyboard slightly larger
Using 6-cell battery gives ~5hours life, but has a battery booty.
