I replaced the HDD in my Dell Mini 12 with a new drive. The old drive died but was recognized by the BIOS. I got a refurb drive (exact same model), installed but not found by the BIOS (in BIOS Setup...Fixed HDD: None).

I tried the old drive and same thing.

How fragile is the ZIF cable? It looks ok but could it be damaged? in some way? I can hear the drive spinning but it's clear that it's not found by the BIOS and thus I can't re-install Windows on it.

Success. Got a ZIF cable from a kit I used to to connect a 1.8 drive to a USB interface. The OEM cable is $28.00 - I ordered five 10cm flat cables off ebay. I'll fit in a cable flip and make it work.
